Old nobility still reigns in the shrouded-in-mystery Tinakilly House, which is located in a wide-ranging parkland on the seaside. The British government had offered to build Captain Halpin the house of his dreams in appreciation for his accomplishment in laying the telegraph wires between Ireland and Canada, and clearly Captain Halpin knew how to make the most of the opportunity. The ground-floor doors for example are made of Burmese mahogany. After the Captain’s daughter Belle was the last family member to pass away in the house in 1952, the rumour spread that her ghost still haunted Tinakilly. Today the Country House hotel is less known for scary ghost stories than for its fabulous cuisine. There are still traces to be found of the old gentlemen’s club. For this reason alone it’s worth it to watch the passers by over a gin & tonic, which is particularly well-made here and may be enjoyed atop a barstool in the classic style.
